Mayor Walsh Welcomes New ONEin3 Council

Challenges young adults to think big and become neighborhood leaders

On Monday Mayor Martin J. Walsh welcomed the newly selected Mayor's ONEin3 Council to the Eagle Room in City Hall. The diverse 31-member group will spend the next 12 months working with the City on projects aimed at maximizing the talents of Boston's 20-34 year old demographic, which is one third of the City's total population.

“With the highest proportion of young adults out of any major city in the country, Boston is leading the way in attracting and retaining Millenials," said Mayor Walsh. "Together, using innovation and creative thinking, we are growing Boston as a sustainable place for young adults to live, work, play, and put down roots."

The Mayor’s ONEin3 Council serves as a direct link between the ONEin3 demographic and city government, and works closely with the Boston Redevelopment Authority's (BRA) ONEin3 program manager, Chloe Ryan. The Council is an action oriented group tasked with brainstorming, creating, and carrying out projects that directly impact the lives of Boston's 20-34 years-olds. Projects may include work on housing policy, professional development, economic development, and civic and neighborhood engagement.

The ONEin3 program received more than 300 applications for the Council, showing a robust interest for involvement and engagement. The applications were reviewed by members of the applicants' peer group and the ONEin3 program manager.

The 2014 ONEin3 Council is comprised of 31 Boston residents, including 16 women and 15 men, who live in 17 different neighborhoods across Boston.  Collectively, the group works in 22 unique industries and received degrees from 38 higher education institutions.  Half of the group is native to Boston, while half grew up outside the city.  The Council will meet monthly.

The ONEin3 program was launched in 2004 to connect Boston’s young adult population with resources related to housing, professional development, financial health, entrepreneurship, and civic engagement. In addition to the Mayor's ONEin3 Council, the ONEin3 program works to connect young adults, including college students, to resources that help them put down roots in the city.
