Mar 29, 2012

The work of Mayor Menino's BRA program, Artist Space Boston, was featured last night at UNITE + Engage, a Design Museum Boston sponsored event and the first in Mayor Menino's ONEin3 Advisory Council's Engagement Economics Series. A panel of representatives from the Boston Redevelopment Authority, Arts and Business Council, Urban Arts Institute, Boston Open Studios Coalition, MassChallenge, and Design Museum Boston discussed the visual arts and design as catalysts for collaboration and economic development in Boston. Heidi Burbidge, Manager of Artist Space Boston, introduced the attendees to Artist Space Boston and its mission to increase the amount of permanent artist space in Boston.  Through Artist Space Boston, 1,300 artists have been certified to live in artist live/work or work units which span across nearly all of Boston's neighborhoods.  Since its creation by Mayor Menino 10 years ago, Artist Space Boston has advocated for the creation of  nearly 200 artist units.  Heidi referred to artists and designers as the producers of the creative economy highlighting their importance in supporting and guiding an important sector of Boston's economy.
