Mayor Menino Prepares Boston for the Next Generation in Green Building

Dec 14, 2010

Boston, already a leader in green building, is now setting to work on the next generation of green buildings. BRA board approves the Energy Positive (E+) Green Building Demonstration Program, a residential design and construction initiative that will bring energy positive green homes to Boston’s neighborhoods. E+ Green Buildings generate more energy than they use annually, saving homeowners money, and meet the highest standards for green and healthy homes.
E+ will build upon Boston’s Article 37 Green Building Zoning, a national model for promoting private green development, with a strong focus on advancing residential green building practices. E+ will issue an RFP for the construction of 10 high performance green residential homes located on 3 parcels of land owned by the City. The findings from E+ will shape Boston’s future green building policies and practices. These prototypes will be built in environmentally sustainable locations utilizing high performance designs and green building materials.
The RFP is scheduled to be issued in Jan 2011. Leading design, construction and development professionals are encourage to participate. E+ has been developed in partnership with NSTAR and National Grid, Wainwright Bank and the US Green Building Council, who are providing preferred “green” lending to program participants as well as promotion for the program. The program is an initiative of the Mayor’s Environment and Energy Services Cabinet, Department of Neighborhood Development and the BRA.
