Cancer Garden of Hope Opens on City Hall Plaza

Jun 18, 2010

Mayor Thomas M. Menino celebrated the grand opening of the Cancer Garden of Hope on City Hall Plaza on Saturday, June 19, 2010 at 12:30 p.m. The Garden is the latest addition to the Plaza and will be a unique tribute to the many people who have been touched by cancer. In partnership with the City of Boston, and many dedicated cancer organizations, the Cancer Garden of Hope remembers loved ones and honors all those involved in the cancer journey – friends, family, colleagues, medical professionals and caregivers. The Garden features personalized engraved bricks and plaques that people have purchased and can still purchase. Proceeds from funds raised go directly into the fight against all cancers.

“I’m honored to celebrate the opening of this wonderful new space on City Hall Plaza,” Mayor Menino said. “I want to thank the Zuker family for the difference they are making in the fight against cancer.”

“This is a project that we are very passionate about and we want this to be a celebration of hope,” said Jonathan Zuker, Executive Director of The Conquer Cancer Coalition of MA. “We feel the space will allow families, individuals, corporations, and anyone who has dealt with this disease to express their feelings and memories, and be empowered to make a difference. Once a brick is sold, it is not only a lasting tribute, but also helps to fund the fight against cancer.”

“Hope Grows Here” is the theme of the garden. The Conquer Cancer Coalition, founded by the Zuker family, also raises funds with its “Conquer Cancer” statewide license plates and unique “Wear Out Cancer” t-shirts. The Coalition hopes to attract donors to help keep the Garden maintained, including annual and perennial sponsorship opportunities.
