Construction to begin on Gardner Museum addition

Jan 22, 2010

Mayor Menino and architect Renzo Piano kicked off construction of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum’s new 70,000 square foot expansion on Thursday, January 21. The addition is intended to relieve pressure on the historic building and collection, improve the visitor experience, and preserve Isabella Gardner’s legacy. It will feature four new volumes, a 2,000-square-foot special exhibition gallery, a 300-seat performance hall, and expanded garden space. The $118 million project is expected to be completed in early 2012.
