Traffic/Transit/Pedestrian Technologies

Traffic/Transit/Pedestrian Technologies

The implementation of an interconnected network of signaling and sensor technologies aimed at promoting transportation efficiency and safety.

ACTIVATION THRESHOLD:

Project resides in corridor of interest, as determined by the Boston Transportation Department (BTD)

Traffic/Transit/Pedestrian (TTP) Technologies enhance Boston’s Complete Streets and Vision Zero Guidelines. If a project lies in a corridor of interest, the BSU program requires the project’s proponent to integrate the infrastructure (shadow conduit) necessary to to support future TTP implementation.

The technologies that fall under the umbrella of Traffic/Transit/Pedestrian Technologies are as follows:

Active Transportation Supportive (ATS) technologies such as Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and Transit Signal Priority (TSP) Smart traffic signals and sensors Electric vehicle (EV) integration Vehicle to grid (V2G) charging

The integration of Traffic/Transit/Pedestrian Technologies provides the following benefits:

  • Safer and more efficient multimodal transit
  • The collection of pedestrian safety trends and data
  • The enhancement of “Complete Streets”
  • Traffic speed management
  • Increase of alternative transportation networks
  • Carbon emission reduction
  • Noise pollution mitigation
  • Electrical grid resilience
