New Food Trucks Set to Serve Up Tasty Treats on Boston's Streets

Mayor’s Healthy Food Initiative Brings Trucks to 15 New Locations
On July 12, Mayor Menino announced that food trucks are ready to serve “wicked good food” on Boston’s streets with 15 new permanent locations in several neighborhoods. The new locations have been approved by the City and the food trucks will rotate between the sites starting July 13, 2011. Boston’s Food Truck program, unlike in other cities, has designated permanent spots on city streets where food truck vendors can apply to operate. The Food Trucks will serve a variety of breakfast, lunch and dinner foods from 6:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m. (with a 9:00 p.m. closing time in some neighborhoods.) These new locations are in addition to the food trucks that already operate on City Hall Plaza and on the Rose Kennedy Greenway. “I’m excited that we have been able to designate permanent spots on city streets for new food truck vendors,” Mayor Menino said. “Food trucks are a fun, fresh way for people to enjoy a variety of food, much of it healthy and locally produced.” The food trucks will be located in the Back Bay, Bay Village, South End, Fenway, Kenmore/BU, Dorchester, Boston Marine Industrial Park/South Boston Waterfront, and the Charlestown Navy Yard. Redbones BBQ 6. Mobile Home 7. Savory Food 8. Staff Meal 9. The Dining Car 10. Grilled Cheese Nation – 2 Trucks: “Minnie” and “Cheese Force One” 11. Kick*ss Cupcakes 12. The Froyo Truck 13. Clover Fast Food 14. Bon Me 15. Pennypackers Additionally, there will be a searchable, user-friendly application available on

starting the week of July 11th that will tell the public which trucks are at which locations/schedule. As part of the Mayor’s Healthy Food Initiative, food trucks applying to participate in the program must include at least one healthy menu option that does not include fried foods, trans- fats, or high fructose corn syrup. The healthy menu option also has to include at least 3 of the following: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, reduced fat or lean meats that are grilled, broiled or baked. Additionally, participating trucks were asked to provide a statement on their commitment to environmental sustainability and community engagement, and to consider joining the Mayor’s “Rethink Your Drink” Campaign. Boston’s Food Truck program is the result of a collaborative effort between the Mayor’s Office, the Boston Transportation Department, the Boston Redevelopment Authority, the Public Works Department, the Department of Neighborhood Development, Inspectional Services Department, the Boston Police Department, the Boston Fire Department and the Parks and Recreation Department. The program is the result of a City Council ordinance that was passed on April 6, 2011. The City is still interested in recruiting new food truck vendors for additional sites. Vendors are encouraged to use the city’s new single application process for procuring food truck permits to operate in Boston as well as a new site license process for trucks interested in selling on the public way.
