Latest Updates

Sign Code Modernization and its accompanying zoning amendments were approved by the BPDA Board on May 14, 2026 and the Boston Zoning Commission on June 17, 2026.

Overview

Sign Code Modernization is a Planning Department initiative that updated the zoning rules and review processes for commercial signage across Boston, to make it easier for small businesses to put up new signs. The initiative, launched in the Spring 2024 and completed in Summer 2026, represented the first comprehensive rewrite of Boston’s sign-related regulations in over 50 years.

Updates to Article 11 of the Boston Zoning Code introduce more flexible and standardized zoning requirements, as well as a streamlined review processes for signs.

Sign Code Modernization has cut permitting timelines for standard signs from 150 days down to 30 days or less, saving small businesses time and money as they open their doors. To support this new process, supplemental materials (including updated permit submission requirements and a comprehensive guide to sign permitting) are now available.

Staff will still ensure a robust review of larger or high-impact signage (such as electronic displays) to ensure appropriate design and contextual fit.
