Mayor Menino Celebrates Hayward Place Groundbreaking

Nov 15, 2011

Today Mayor Menino joined Millennium Partners to celebrate the groundbreaking on a $220 million residential development in Downtown Crossing.  The 15-story building will add 256 new housing units to the neighborhood, including multi-bedroom residences for the growing number of families in the district.  Along Washington Street and Avenue de Lafayette 9,700 square feet of ground floor retail will activate the streetscape and create new opportunities for entrepreneurs.  The 390,000 square foot development will include 125 below-grade parking spaces and is slated for completion in 2013. “Today we are celebrating the groundbreaking on a capstone project in the revitalization of lower Washington Street that will put 450 construction workers back on the job,” said Mayor Thomas M. Menino.  “Millennium Partner’s $220M private investment will transform a parking lot into an active mixed-use destination.  Hundreds of new residents will add to the vibrancy of Downtown Crossing.” “This new building at Millennium Place represents our firm belief in the long-term value of dramatic urban centers. We strive to create vibrant places in which to live and work, places where everyone can enjoy the heart of the city,” said Anthony Pangaro, Principal of Millennium Partners-Boston. “ The City of Boston showed us the way to the future with its forward-looking development and operations plan for the district.” The revitalization of Downtown Crossing and lower Washington Street has been a hallmark of the Menino administration, and Millennium Partners has played a key role in that transformation.  The company’s investment in the Ritz Carlton Hotel and Towers completed in 2001 and 2002 kick started investor interest in the area. Hayward Place will join a long list of new and exciting projects happening in the neighborhood, including The Kensington, which will add 381 new rental units when it is completed in 2013 and 45 Province that added more than 150 new residences last year.  The renovation of three historic theaters and Suffolk University’s new student housing on West Street have further contributed to the vibrancy of the district. In the last two years 50 new businesses, such as Salvatore’s and Sweet, have joined the eclectic mix of shopping options in the district, and 13 new businesses will open next year.  This year Downtown Crossing celebrated Boston’s first Business Improvement Districts (BID), demonstrating the commitment that local property owners have to the area’s continuing success. The Hayward Place project was designed by Handel Architects of New York, the same firm that designed the newly opened National September 11 Memorial and Museum in New York City.  Suffolk Construction, Inc. of Boston is the construction manager and also worked on the nearby Modern Theatre and The Boston Opera House. About Millennium Since 1995 Millennium Partners has planned and built more than four million square feet of space in Boston, including the Ritz-Carlton Hotel and Towers; the One Charles Condominium; the 10 St. James/75 Arlington Office Complex; and 179 Lincoln, and the restoration of a historic industrial building on the Greenway. Millennium has developed large scale urban projects in New York, Miami, Washington, D.C. and San Francisco, the home of its most recent project, Millennium Towers, a 60-story 419-unit Residential Tower.
