Team Massachusetts to Build Solar Powered House in Boston This Summer

Apr 14, 2011

Architecture and engineering students from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and UMass-Lowell are leading “Team Massachusetts” in the 2011 U.S. Solar Decathlon.  In this highly competitive event, 20 student teams from around the world will design and build 100% solar-powered houses. Houses are judged not only on their energy efficiency but affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence.  The event attracts visitors and media coverage from around the world.  It’s become so successful that Europe and China have each launched their own Solar Decathlon. Prior to moving to Washington, “Team Massachusetts” will spend the summer in Boston’s Marine Industrial Park after receiving BRA board approval at tonight’s board meeting. Team Massachusetts will construct their solar house this summer (June – early September) on the 15,000 sq ft Parcel Q-1 in the Marine Industrial Park. This cutting-edge demonstration project will draw faculty and students from area colleges and universities, energy industry professionals, architects, and educators from all over New England. Once completed, Team Massachusetts will heading to Washington DC for the final competition on the National Mall in early fall.
