Harvard University, founded in 1636, is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. Its campus straddles the Charles River, with facilities in both Boston and Cambridge. Harvard University's 21-acre Medical Campus is in Longwood Medical Center, a world-renowned cluster of medical, academic, and research institutions adjacent to the Fenway neighborhood. The campus comprises Harvard's Medical School, School of Dental Medicine, and School of Public Health, with a total enrollment of 2,793 students. The schools at Harvard University's Longwood Campus are affiliated with many of the hospitals in the area, including Brigham and Women's, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston Children's Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Joslin Diabetes Center.
