Emmanuel College, established in 1919, is a Roman Catholic liberal arts college located in the Longwood Medical Area. Emmanuel was founded as a women's college, but became coeducational in 2001. The school enrolls 2,500 students in undergraduate programs, and is a member of the Colleges of the Fenway consortium. In 2001 Emmanuel leased a portion of its land to Merck Pharmaceuticals for a state of the art research laboratory.
Emmanuel filed its most recent Institutional Master Plan in 2012. The IMP included the goals of increasing both undergraduate enrollment and undergraduate on-campus housing options, and a new 76,000 square foot addition to the Cardinal Cushing Library.
In 2015 Emmanuel was approved to build a new Julie Hall, which will be a 267,500 SF dormitory and include 691 beds.
