Mayor Menino Celebrates New Housing In Fort Point

Jul 26, 2012

Mayor Thomas M. Menino, BRA Director Peter Meade, developers Gerding Edlen, Restaurateur Barbara Lynch, and Senator Jack Hart celebrated a groundbreaking on Boston Wharf Tower in Fort Point.  The $100 million project will feature 202 rental units, including 22 onsite affordable units and achieve a minimum LEED silver certification. The project also includes an offsite component at 63 Melcher Street with 27 units of innovation housing.
“From the very start of our plan for the waterfront and Fort Point Channel, we knew housing would be a crucial part of the equation.  There are a lot of exciting things happening down here – from the arts to the restaurants and more – and people want to be part of it.  They want to live down here and continue the momentum, Boston Wharf Tower will give residents the opportunity they have been waiting for.”-Mayor Menino.
Boston Wharf Tower at 319 A Street Rear in the heart of the Innovation District will be Gerding Edlen’s first Boston development.   This 20-story tower will consist of 202 residential units and will be the first new high-rise multifamily project in the Fort Point Channel area and is slated for completion by November 2013. A sister project at 63 Melcher will feature 38 units of housing, including 27 innovation units for entrepreneurs, 5 affordable live/work artist spaces, and 6 top floor market rate units. 63 Melcher is scheduled to come online in fall 2012. Gerding Edlen is one of the nation’s leading sustainable developers and is headquartered in Portland, Oregon.  Both Boston Wharf Tower and 63 Melcher are designed to maximize space and minimize energy usage and both projects are expected to achieve minimum LEED Silver certification. Event attendees previewed an “interpretation” of a residential unit from the Boston Wharf Tower, fabricated on site by Suffolk Construction and designed by Fort Point artist, Karen Stein.   This one-day-only interactive display highlighted the creativity of the Fort Point Channel neighborhood and demonstrates the district’s support for new residential development in this emerging area.
