Mayor Menino Announces Boston's First Green Warehouse

Oct 27, 2011

On Friday, October 28, Mayor Menino celebrated the ribbon cutting of Boston’s first green warehouse, part of his commitment to making Boston greener.  Boston has the second greatest number of green buildings nationally and is home to almost 100 U.S. Green Building Council LEED Certified buildings. F.W. Webb’s 47,657 s.f. two-story distribution center and showroom at 307 Dorchester Avenue in South Boston is LEED certifiable and is more efficient than the state building code requires.  F.W. Webb is the largest plumbing, heating, HVAC and industrial pipe, valves, and fittings distributor in New England and New York. The company has transformed an existing underutilized warehouse into a state-of the art facility supplied by renewable energy.  Thirteen percent of the heating and hot water needs will be met by 30 thermal solar panels, an 8,000 gallon energy storage tank, and a solar collector system for potable hot water.  A geothermal water source connected to the HVAC system will provide cooling for the warehouse.  Twelve additional solar photovoltaic panels will reduce the building’s electrical demands on the energy grid and provide surplus energy when the building is closed. Although the original building was demolished, 75% of the construction waste was recycled or salvaged.  Approximately 70 construction jobs were created, and 25 F.W. Webb employees will be based at the South Boston location.  Fifty-seven parking spaces, including three handicapped spots are also on-site.  To further customer access to the warehouse, the City of Boston will install a designated traffic signal to the driveway on the southern side of Dorchester Ave.
