The water / glycol based cooling system in the building is operational and functional with the exception being the failing cast iron condensation piping. For this project the piping will all need to be replaced from the cooling towers back to the boilers. We would like a designer to suggest the most feasible, cost effective and potentially energy efficient option that should be pursued.
Currently, the piping runs up a vertical concealed shafted to the roof to then meet the cooling tower to loop back down the same shaft back to the boilers. Options a designer would assess is removing and replacing in kind or abandoning in place and incorporating a new shaft in the building among any other creative suggestions the designer may propose. There are many pros and cons (aside from cost) for each option that should be weighed and considered when making the final design. Furthermore, it should be investigated if there are any code, energy, or O&M deficiencies that would take precedent in determining a design option.
