Emerson College, specializing in communication and performing arts, is tucked into Boston's bustling Downtown neighborhood alongside the Boston Common. Founded in 1880 as a "school of oratory" with ten students, Emerson now enrolls 3,700 undergraduates and 688 postgraduates studying fields such as journalism, publishing, visual arts, performing arts, film, and television.
In 2015 Emerson College was approved for a three year renewal to its Institutional Master Plan. Emerson's most recently approved projects include a new 376 bed residence hall to be located at 1-3 Boylston Place and the Little Building Project, which consists of a restoration of the building facade, interior renovations of floors 2-12 and a newly constructed 13th floor entirely behind a 14'4 parapet. The Project will add 294 new beds, new common rooms, student social space and an updated/renovated dining facility accomodating 450 students.
