Boston University, founded in 1839, is composed of two main campuses. The 135-acre Charles River Campus, based in the northern part of the Fenway neighborhood, houses mostly undergraduate and graduate programs. The 80-acre Boston University Medical Center, located in the South End, consists of two bodies, the Boston Medical Center and the Boston University Medical Campus. The latter hosts Medical, Dental, and Public Health Schools. BU's total student body numbers 33,000 and the university is one of the largest employers in Boston. Due to their very different needs and locations, BU's two campuses file their Institutional Master Plan's separately.
Boston University's Charles River Campus filed its most recent IMP in early 2013. This filing included updated campus-wide zoning, a renovation of the Law School, expanded academic and research spaces around campus, and streetscape and public realm improvements.
The 2015 BU IMPNF describes adding 700 Beacon Street as a proposed project into the approved Institutional Master Plan for classroom, office, lab and meeting space uses.
