Mayor & BRA Host 3rd Annual Retail Opportunities Tour

Jul 14, 2010

On Tuesday, July 13, Mayor Menino touted Boston as the place for retailers to locate and grow their business as he hosted the 3rd annual retail opportunities tour to showcase Boston’s vibrant retail districts and the available retail space. More than 100 retailers, brokers and developers joined the Mayor and the Boston Redevelopment Authority on the tour, which was held as a prelude to the International Conference of Shopping Center’s New England Idea Exchange at the Hynes Convention Center on July 14 and 15. The tour began in Downtown Crossing at the recently opened Ames Hotel before a stop at 45 Province Street. The tour then progressed through the Financial District and along the Greenway. The group then boarded a boat for a harbor tour that highlighted opportunities in the North End, Charlestown, East Boston, the Fort Point Channel and the South Boston Waterfront.

“I look forward to this tour every year – it gives us the opportunity to market Boston to private investors who can spur job creation and help to expand our tax-base,” Mayor Menino said. “I’m hopeful that today’s tour will lead to a number of new retail occupancies in the areas that we’re highlighting and throughout the entire city of Boston.”

The City is able to provide a number of resources to retailers, brokers and developers through its Retail Sector Initiative at the Boston Redevelopment Authority. The BRA’s Retail Sector Manager, Kristen Keefe, works to market existing and future retail opportunities, connects retailers to capital and is a single point of contact for retail businesses at City Hall.

“Nobody is a better salesperson for Boston than Mayor Menino,” said John F. Palmieri, director of the Boston Redevelopment Authority. “Just last week we welcomed 45 new businesses that have opened in the Back Bay since last year’s tour. Those 45 businesses created approximately 500 new jobs. We’re excited about the possibilities that these new retail opportunities can create.”

In addition to the opportunities highlighted on the tour, participants were provided with fact sheets with retail opportunities available across the city.
