Dana Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) is located in the cluster of medical, academic, and research institutes that comprise the Longwood Medical and Academic Area. The Institute was founded in 1947 as the Children's Cancer Research Foundation, and in 1969 it expanded to include patients of all ages. Today DFCI provides outpatient services and is a major research institute. Each year the Institute receives more than 299,000 patient visits and is involved with several hundred clinical trials. Brigham and Women's Hospital, which hosts DFCI inpatient services, and Harvard Medical School are both major affiliates.
