Boston University merged with Wheelock College, a 130-year old private institution composed of three schools focusing on education, social work, and arts and sciences, on May 30, 2018. The Wheelock College of Education and Human Development (WCEHD) became a new academic unit of Boston University on June 1, 2018. The new academic unit merged Boston University's School of Education and the former Wheelock College's School of Education, Child Life, and Family Studies.
In 2007, Wheelock prepared its first Institutional Master Plan which presented information on the existing campus, academic programs, the mission and goals of Wheelock as well as its long-range plans for the next ten years. The IMP also listed proposed projects including the Campus Center and Student Residences Project. In 2008, Wheelock submitted the First Amendment to the IMP for the Riverway House Renovations and New Addition Project. Most recently, Wheelock submitted the Second Amendment to the IMP for the Center for Learning and Innovation. All three projects have been completed. The BPDA voted in September 2017 to renew the amended IMP through September 14, 2020.
