OWD and partners kick off Facilities Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship Program

Jul 19, 2018

On July 17, 2018 the Mayor’s Office of Workforce Development (OWD), an affiliate of the Boston Planning & Development Agency (BPDA), hosted a kickoff event for the first registered apprenticeship for Facilities Maintenance Technicians in Massachusetts. The program launch was celebrated in the Castle Square area of Boston’s South End.

Community partners, including YouthBuild Boston and Wentworth Institute of Technology, came together to create this new apprenticeship, which enables workers to learn and earn at the same time. Over the 18-month, 3,000-hour job training provided by WinnResidential and Wentworth, apprentices can access a successful pathway towards a stable career, as well as a significant number of college credits.

A goal of this apprenticeship is for apprentices to develop skills in both indoor and outdoor facility maintenance, paving the way to better pay and benefits. WinnResidential, the fifth largest multifamily property manager in the U.S., is the program’s employer sponsor. The organization is heavily involved in housing partnerships, especially with affordable housing, and looks forward to helping capable apprentices grow their careers.

Aligned with OWD’s mission, the apprenticeship provides another avenue for Boston residents, particularly those without a college degree, to achieve economic mobility.
