The BRA's Deputy Director of Research, Mark Melnik, was interviewed by Chris Lovett of Neighborhood Network News about the 2010 Boston Census and how to best access the readily available information. Time codes for key moments in the program:
  • How Boston's population growth compares to other cities:
    • 0:38 Between 2000 and 2010 the population of Boston grew 5%, only outpaced by Washington DC, which grew at a rate of 5.2%.
  • What sectors of Boston's population have grown to make it a majority minority City?
    • 1:33 In 2010 Boston was a 53% majority minority city. Since 1980 the Hispanic population has grown 74% and the Asian population has grown 85%.
  • What about foreign born residents in Boston?
    • 2:45 Boston ranks 6th among the 25 largest cities in percentage of foreign born population. A majority of the foreign born population comes from China, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Vietnam. Close to half of Boston's children have one parent who is foreign born.
  • What is the largest segment of the population in Boston?
    • 3:49 Boston has the highest population of 20-34 year-olds in a major US city, more than 30%. In 2000 Boston was ranked in 2nd place behind Austin, TX for its total number of 20-34 year olds. 1/2 of college degrees in Boston are held by 20-34-year-olds.
