Mass Mental Health Center Celebrates Groundbreaking for New Facility

Oct 20, 2010

Mayor Thomas Menino and BRA Director John Palmieri joined the Department of Mental Health, Brigham & Women's Hospital and Partners Healthcare yesterday for a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Mass. Mental Health Center (MMHC) facility in the Longwood/Mission Hill neighborhood. The MMHC Redevelopment Project is a unique public-private initiative of the Department of Mental Health (DMH), the Division of Capital Asset Management (DCAM) and Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Partners Healthcare. The 98-year-old MMHC, which serves adults with serious mental illness in the Metro Boston area, will be replaced with a new state-of-the-art treatment facility. DCAM and DMH partnered with Brigham & Women’s Hospital and the Roxbury Tenants of Harvard to redevelop the site with plans for MMHC to return to the neighborhood by mid-2012. The plans for the site also include a major affordable housing complex and a Brigham and Women’s clinical and research building. This project will create hundreds of construction jobs as well as a variety of permanent jobs and will expand the pool of affordable housing for the city’s residents.
