Raymond L. Flynn Marine Park

formerly the Boston Marine Industrial Park (BMIP)

 
In 1977, the City of Boston, acting through its Economic Development and Industrial Corporation (EDIC), secured ownership of the 167-acre South Boston Naval Annex from the U.S Department of Defense. The Raymond L. Flynn Marine Park, as the area is known, was intended to create jobs and economic activity which would enhance the City’s economy and provide employment for City residents. In 1983, EDIC added another 24 acres to the park site. Today, the area provides space for a wide array of marine related, industrial and light industrial, and other types of businesses.
 
In 1999, the Boston Redevelopment Authority published its multi-phased Final Master Plan for the park. The plan outlined a rehabilitation and reuse project that is marked by its ongoing and successful public-private redevelopment and investment strategy.  To date, this public-private investment has created over 3 million square feet of commercial-industrial space in both new and rehabilitated buildings that now support over 250 businesses, employing approximately 3,500 people. The park is Boston's largest expanse of contiguous industrial land, it contains an active dry-dock and benefits from 9,300 linear feet of shoreline that continue to grow in economic importance. 
 
Long range plans for the park call for a an additional 1.6 million square feet of leasable space comprised of a mixture of maritime industrial and related uses such as seafood processing, cruises, ship repair, bulk and break bulk cargo operations, storage and distribution, all supported by new and improved roadway and utility infrastructure, marine infrastructure and future direct rail access.  Uses in non-water dependent areas include general industrial, manufacturing, research and development and limited supporting commercial uses.
