Creating diverse housing opportunities
Urban Renewal was key to the success of the Charlesview Residences. As Harvard expanded into Allston, they hoped to redevelop the original Charlesview Apartments. However, due to the land use restrictions of the North Harvard Urban Renewal Plan, they were required to maintain the housing. The BRA agreed to modify the plan if they relocated the residents, and used their Urban Renewal powers to assemble an appropriate site nearby. Harvard worked closely with community members, and the resulting project is vastly superior to the original development and houses almost all of the original residents. The new Charlesview Residences also includes home ownership opportunities (unlike the previous project) as well as an increased mix of affordability.
