Bedford/Kingston Island Makeover Improves Accessibility, Lighting Downtown

Nov 21, 2013

This week the intersection of Bedford and Kingston Streets in Downtown Boston saw the completion of significant alterations which will improve accessibility, pedestrian safety, lighting, and aesthetics.

The intersection, which features a small traffic island, suffered from poor drainage, broken sidewalks, a deteriorated planter, and outdated pedestrian signals. A team composed of the City of Boston's Department of Public Works, the Downtown Boston Business Improvement District, and BRA staff collaborated closely between 2012 and 2013 to  design and implement improvements to the infrastructure. Surrounding businesses and property owners offered input throughout the process, and the Massachusetts Architectural Access Board provided guidance in creating ramps and improving accessibility for disabled persons.

Some of the improvements include:

  • improved curb cuts and ramps,
  • improved crosswalks and signalization,
  • a new planter and new plants in the island,
  • corrected drainage,
  • street repaving,
  • and additional lighting.
