Navy Yard decommissioned and conveyed to BRA
The Navy Yard was decommissioned on July 1, 1974 and a portion was subsequently conveyed by the General Services Administration (GSA) to the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) in 1978. A number of studies were conducted (see 1975) and proposals considered. Four distinct parcels were ultimately identified in the disposition process: the National Historic Site (controlled by the National Park Service); the Historic Monument Area; the Public Park; and, the New Development Area. The current RFP process is focused on the latter two. The transfer of the Boston Naval Shipyard at Charlestown from the GSA was envisioned to “provide a lively mix of cultural and educational facilities, retail and commercial uses", “housing and related services” and waterfront access, with the parking for the Shipyard potentially being provided by the conversion in part of warehouse buildings 149 and 199 to public parking facilities.
